Care & Maintenance Instructions For Our Wooden Hot Tubs & Wine Barrel Ice Baths
Wood care
- Always keep the tub moist – ensure you keep water in your bath, even when not in use. Occasionally, soak the lid in the tub to moisten the timber.
A good reminder is when you water the plants – water the hot tub!
- When a tub dries out, it loses its watertight properties.
- The exterior of the tub should be regularly oiled. Ask at the time of purchase for the brand of oil used for your tub.
- Inspect screws from time-to-time on the tub and ensure it sits evenly on the stand.
Water care from water contaminants
The tub is a natural product, and naturally borne contaminants can grow in the water and on the wood surface over time.
- Emptying and giving the tub a light scrub with a scrubbing brush every few months can remove any buildup on the timber surface when draining and refilling.
- To conserve the bath water, you can consult with your local pool shop on products and regimes to keep your water healthy.
- There are many non-chlorinated products available these days. Ensure to ask about any suggested products and their effects on timber.
Also note
- Epsom salts can help slow the buildup of bacteria.
- Products you can use to clean the barrel include Borax and antibacterials
- Water-soluble essential oils (eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender) can be used to protect your bath water from bacteria.
HEATED TUBS
Fire Safety
- If you are using a tub with heating elements (thermosiphoning unit), please read below for additional safety advice and always check the temperature and test the water before entering.
Warnings
- Given that the tub lacks a thermostat, it is essential to regularly check the incoming water temperature and adjust the fuel level accordingly.
- Remember, the use of fire always has risks! Ensure your fire is contained and the wood on the tub is protected.
- Ensure children and pets are protected from the fire, and the surrounding environment cannot ignite or facilitate the spread of fire.
- Do not light a fire on Total Fire Ban days.
Thermosiphoning unit care
- The Thermosiphoning unit (copper Coil) and associated piping, including the inlet and outlet, can become extremely hot, causing significant burns. Never touch the piping when the fire is in use; always check the water temperature instead.
- Always ensure that there is an increased gradient (i.e., the pipe from the fire to the barrel is flowing upward) for the unit.
- Always ensure there is enough water in the barrel for the water returning to the unit to be under the bath level.
WARNING: Boiling water within the Thermosiphoning coil can cause the coil to rupture and potentially explode. Regularly inspect the coil for any signs of wear or damage, sharp bends or leaks.
